Community Dynamics of Ectomycorrhizal Fungi Following the Vision

چکیده
Many people that read this chapter may be aware of mammals, birds, and maybe even plant species that are common at Point Reyes, and may have witnessed or have been aware of the ways that these organisms responded to the Vision fi re of 1995. Few will be familiar with fungal species at Point Reyes, and even fewer may have noticed their response to the fi re. This is un for tu nate, be cause fungi play many critical roles in structuring and maintaining plant (and therefore also animal) communities at Point Reyes. It is un der stand able, however, because even those of us that study fungi for a living know less about them than plant or animal biologists typically know about their or gan isms. There are several reasons for our collective ignorance. Fungi can be diffi cult to identify, so reliable species records are rare. For most of their lives, fungi are microscopic and hidden in soil or plant parts; this makes it diffi cult to observe their basic life histories and ecology. Finally, relatively few people study fungi, especially when one considers that there are roughly six species of fungi for every plant species on the planet (Hawksworth 1990). The good news is that there is much to learn, and the Vision fi re provided an exceptional opportunity to do exactly that.

متن کاملChange in soil fungal community structure driven by a decline in ectomycorrhizal fungi following a mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) outbreak.
Western North American landscapes are rapidly being transformed by forest die-off caused by mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), with implications for plant and soil communities. The mechanisms that drive changes in soil community structure, particularly for the highly prevalent ectomycorrhizal fungi in pine forests, are complex and intertwined. Critical to enhancing understanding wi...
متن کاملPotential link between plant and fungal distributions in a dipterocarp rainforest: community and phylogenetic structure of tropical ectomycorrhizal fungi across a plant and soil ecotone.
*Relatively little is known about diversity or structure of tropical ectomycorrhizal communities or their roles in tropical ecosystem dynamics. In this study, we present one of the largest molecular studies to date of an ectomycorrhizal community in lowland dipterocarp rainforest. *We sampled roots from two 0.4 ha sites located across an ecotone within a 52 ha forest dynamics plot. Our plots co...
متن کاملDiversity and community structure of ectomycorrhizal fungi in a wooded meadow.
Wooded meadows are seminatural plant communities that support high diversity of various taxa. Due to changes in land use, wooded meadows have severely declined during the last century. The dominant trees in wooded meadows acquire mineral nutrients via ectomycorrhizal fungi. Using anatomotyping and sequencing of root tips, interpolation and extrapolation methods, we studied the diversity and com...
متن کاملThe effect of environmental contamination on the community structure and fructification of ectomycorrhizal fungi
Ectomycorrhizal fungi are an essential component of forest ecosystems, most of which can form edible and medical fruiting bodies. Although many studies have focused on the fructification of ectomycorrhizal fungi in phenology, the impact of environmental contamination, especially living garbage, on the formation of fruiting body is still unknown. A field investigation, combined with a high-throu...
متن کاملEctomycorrhizal-Dominated Boreal and Tropical Forests Have Distinct Fungal Communities, but Analogous Spatial Patterns across Soil Horizons
Fungi regulate key nutrient cycling processes in many forest ecosystems, but their diversity and distribution within and across ecosystems are poorly understood. Here, we examine the spatial distribution of fungi across a boreal and tropical ecosystem, focusing on ectomycorrhizal fungi. We analyzed fungal community composition across litter (organic horizons) and underlying soil horizons (0-20 ...
